"It's true that within the aviation industry everybody just thinks about pilots, cabin crew. But it's not all about the people in the sky. We've got an army of people that operate the airline behind us", says Mark Duffy, Deputy HR Manager at Ryanair and Head of talent.
Ryanair Competing in the Market
It's true that within the aviation industry everybody just thinks about pilots and cabin crew. At Ryanair there are 5,000 pilots and 10,000 cabin crew. They're Europe's largest airline with 455 aircrafts and 83 offices across Europe.
But it's not all about the people in the sky. Ryanair has got an army of people that operate the airline behind us and a head office in Dublin with all the Sales, Marketing, Finance functions.
"Now, the biggest problem we have at Ryanair is that we get the cabin crew, that's fine, we get the pilots, as well. There are no issues getting them on board, however, we really do struggle to get top talent into the head office", says Mark Duffy. "Because at the end of the day we're competing against the Facebooks, the Googles, the Twitters of this world. Dublin is very much a hub for US-multinational companies. It's a big challenge for us to go out there and hire good people, especially in finance, experienced accountants."
Ryanair doesn't offer the bells and whistles benefits that the big four multinationals would do. At Ryanair it's about rolling up your sleeves, being in the office from 8.30 - 5.30. There is no flexi-time or anything like that, there's no working from home, you don't get 25-30 days holidays, free breakfast that all these big companies give you.
"But what we do give you, we give you opportunities to grow. You come in and you join us as a graduate, you go through a two-year grad-program, within 4-5 years you can be the next CFO. We're very much developing as an organization."
It's not just Ryanair now, it's the whole Ryanair group structure. If people put their hands up, they show their initiative, they put that craft in, you can certainly be the next Michael O'Leary at Ryanair.
