cut-e and Rolls-Royce are shortlisted for the ABP’s ‘Excellence in Innovation’ award

Assessment specialist cut-e has been shortlisted for the Association of Business Psychology’s 2017 Excellence in Innovation in Assessment award, for its work on a state-of-the-art talent assessment solution at Rolls-Royce.

The Association for Business Psychology’s Workforce Experience Awards celebrate excellence in the application of psychology in business. The judges are looking for innovative and validated examples of best practice, with evidence of stakeholder engagement, practical value and business impact.

When Rolls-Royce wanted to introduce a consistent assessment process for its global interns and apprentices, cut-e created the world’s first instant messaging simulation game - a mobile solution that is radically different to the traditional situational judgement questionnaires that are typically used by other employers.

Called chatAssess, the new assessment tests for verbal, numerical and mechanical skills, as well as cognitive abilities and attitudes, in a familiar format and a job-relevant context. In real time, candidates are required to manage a simulated ‘inbox’ of a manager. Each candidate receives messages containing requests or questions from different ‘colleagues’ and they must choose a reply response from a set of pre-defined possible answers. After sending their selected response, they receive another reply from the colleague, continuing the conversation with further requests or questions. The assessment includes several conversations with different ‘colleagues’. The data from each candidate’s responses is collected and scored, resulting in a validated analysis of their performance.

cut-e customised the assessment to reflect Rolls-Royce’s specific corporate branding and developed the content to reflect real-life scenarios that candidates would face in their roles.

Suki Findon, Rolls-Royce’s European Resourcing Lead/Campus Manager: Graduates, Interns and Apprenticeships Talent, Organisation & Leadership, said: “At Rolls-Royce, we strive for candidate-centric, innovative recruitment. chatAssess allows us to engage our candidates in a realistic and easy to use format. This helps us create a wonderful user experience for our applicants, as well as providing us with robust assessments and process efficiencies for our HR team.”

chatAssess provides a fresh and innovative candidate experience that is valid, robust and fair. It not only helps Rolls-Royce to identify the most talented and high potential candidates, it also supports the company’s diversity and inclusion agenda.

The Workforce Experience Awards will be announced at the gala dinner at the 2017 ABP Annual Conference, on Thursday 12 October 2017. Howard Grosvenor, Director of Professional Services at cut-e UK, will present this project in a dedicated conference session on Friday 13 October (11.40am-12.20pm) at the Holiday Inn, Brentford Lock, near Kew, West London.
