Strengthening Your Resilience Muscle 1 In today's VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) business environment, organizations and their employees are continuously confronted with unfamiliar and daunting challenges. Successful organizations recognize that in order to thrive, employees must be able to weather these challenges. In fact, Aon Hewitt's Top Companies for LeadersĀ® research reveals that a key differentiator of world-class companies is their focus on developing resilient leaders. The concept of resilience has recently gained popularity through its relationship with various positive outcomes. For example, employees characterized as "more resilient" generally experience greater well-being and less stress (e.g., Mealer et al., 2012; Tugade et al., 2004), which subsequently leads to lower levels of absenteeism and turnover, as well as higher levels of satisfaction and engagement. Additionally, resilient employees have been linked to a more productive, better-performing workforce (Kumari and Sangwan, 2015). Overall, employees are healthier, both psychologically and physically, and more effective when they are resilient. Clearly, employees and organizations can benefit by fostering greater resilience.
