Managers lead by example and are the ambassadors for the organisation’s behaviours, values and culture. For those responsible for identifying and developing first-line managers there are some very real challenges. Firstly, they need to understand the skills and behaviours that new managers specifically must demonstrate, and secondly, they need a way to benchmark these skills across the talent pool. They also need a way to develop specific skills when a skills gap is identified.
The specific skills and behaviours needed have changed. There are new demands of a rapidly changing workplace and a need to engage, build empathy, develop inclusivity and promote wellbeing with an often geographically dispersed team. It means that we need a new model for first-line managers that better reflects today’s challenges.
