Objectively Benchmarking and Highlighting Areas for Action
Whilst committed to organizational progress and delivering high levels of service, the Corporate Governance and Joint Services Directorate’s management team questioned the value of the combined management group and its meetings. It knew that strong management teams are a feature of strong organizations and therefore decided to take action and see how improvements could be made.
The assessment tool effect, was used to benchmark the team in 24 factors of management team effectiveness. The initial baseline clearly indicated the following areas on which the team needed to focus:
- Defining the team’s purpose.
- Developing a stronger team culture amongst the management team.
- Clarifying how the team wanted to operate and run team meetings.
After six months of working on improving these areas, a re-completion of the effect questionnaire showed an improvement in targeted areas and additional strengths not flagged previously (a more continuous approach to team learning, and relevant training and development opportunities).
After a further six months, the team witnessed an even greater improvement in those areas initially targeted, as well as positive movement across nearly all of the 24 factors.
