cut-e announces winner of the Theta Award 2015

cut-e, the leader in online testing and assessment, has presented the Theta Award 2015 to the Institute of Knowledge Based Systems & Knowledge Management (KBS&KM) at the University of Siegen, Germany.

The Theta Award was established in 2013 by cut-e to recognise outstanding innovation in person-job fit. Chosen by a panel of judges from across industries and countries, Dr Ansari’s submission on behalf of the Med-Assess team focused on the assessing job knowledge of nurses and caregivers.

Dr Achim Preuss, co-founder and MD of the cut-e Group comments, “The Theta Award is the only award of its kind as it is recognises great ideas which, when put into practice, truly enhance the person-job fit within an organisation.”

Dr Preuss continues, “The Chair of Prof Dr-Ing Madjid Fathi coordinated an EU-funded project in which Dr Ansari led an international team from Amsterdam Business School at the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands), the Corvinno Technology Transfer Center (Hungary) and Beta Klinik GmbH (Germany). The consortium has applied an innovative solution to the nursing profession looking at the assessment of essential competencies and job knowledge to recruit high quality staff but also to signpost the areas for development where a skills and knowledge gap exists.”

“All submissions were reviewed before the shortlist being presented to an international panel of experts drawn from industry, psychometrics and applied psychology.” Dr Preuss continues. “The panel was asked to review the submissions based on three key criteria: innovation – as the winning idea needed to be something that is either completely new or is a new application of a current practice; practicality and usability - as without this it cannot be put into practice and, finally, there needed to be a clear value-add to a person or people and their fit with their job.”

The winner was announced as part of cut-e’s international Networking event held in Hamburg, Germany and Dr Ansari and Prof Fathi accepted the award and the prize fund of 5,000 Euros.

One of the judges commented that Med-Assess “has great potential to add value from many perspectives. It not only ensures that those people with the right competence are recruited into nurse positions, but also can be used as a strong training and development tool.”

Dr Ansari comments, “I was thrilled to hear that my team and I had won the Theta Award. Our research and development of what we call Med-Assess is timely as health sectors across Europe are demanding highly qualified nurses.”

Dr Ansari continues, “The key to determining quality of nursing performance is by considering the ability and skill to apply appropriately specific knowledge in any given situation and, where necessary, filling existing knowledge or skills gaps by taking part in vocational education and training. The development of Med-Assess supports this drive for quality nursing staff by assessing work-based nursing competencies and job knowledge, highlighting knowledge gaps, and providing recommendations for improving nursing competencies.”

Dr Ansari comments on the future development of Med-Assess, “Our work continues to shape the Med-Assess approach and we are working currently on the advancement of the ontological knowledge-base and the exploitation of the system in the context of an Erasmus+ funded project, Professional Nursing Education and Training (Pro-Nursing).”
