Try out this Christmas game

With an eye firmly on the countdown to Christmas and making sure the office is decorated with baubles and tinsel, our cut-e test development elves have designed an online Christmas Challenge.

When there’s so much to remember when preparing for Christmas, don’t we all need a little practise to make sure we don’t forget anything?

Called the Christmas Decoration Challenge, it’s a 30-second game which involves memorising a grid of 12 Christmas-themed images, including decorations, presents, stockings, ribbons and reindeer. You’ll then be shown a blank grid, and a series of individual images, and you have to quickly identify the position in which each image was first displayed. You’re given instant feedback on whether your choices are right or wrong. At the end, your score is calculated and you receive feedback on the implications, as well as how you compare against others. And for those wanting to share and claim bragging rights for great scores, you can save your score in the ‘high scores’ list for others to see.

It’s a fun challenge which tests your reaction speed and your short-term memory; think of it as a pre-Christmas brain workout that primes you to be prepared and unflustered as you approach the festive season. Indeed, former studies have shown, that training the working memory can even improve your overall fluid intelligence, which is responsible for reasoning and solving new problems independently of previously acquired knowledge (Jaeggi, Buschkuehl, Jonsides and Perrig, 2008).

But, although this game is light-hearted, the science and scoring behind it is the same as that of frequently-used online assessments. You will, for example, see that your end score is driven by not just the number of correctly detected images, but also the time you took to answer. Games and game-based memory tests are widely used alongside traditional psychometric assessments to assess people for jobs, to help differentiate employers and to provide an immersive experience for candidates.

Remember, though that whilst high scores on this test won’t get you that Christmas job you’re after, it will help you get into the Christmas spirit!
